Why Refab-Africa
The Initiative
ReFab-Africa is a bold initiative addressing the dual challenges of textile waste and maternal health in Nigeria through a creative, community-driven, and climate-conscious model. By repurposing textile waste into stylish, functional clothing and aligning this effort with social incentives for health-seeking behavior, ReFab-Africa presents a transformative solution that goes far beyond fashion. It is a model that fosters sustainability, dignity, and access — at once circular and deeply human.
The textile waste crisis in Nigeria
The rise of global fast fashion
Large-scale importation of second-hand clothing
Limited infrastructure for textile recycling
These discarded textiles often end up in dumpsites, water channels, and landfills — contributing to environmental degradation, health hazards, and worsening urban sanitation challenges.
Meanwhile, the informal waste economy — which could serve as a solution — remains underutilized, leaving communities affected by both pollution and poverty with little opportunity for economic recovery or growth.
Turning Waste Into Worth
ReFab-Africa transforms this urgent problem into a unique opportunity. Through upcycling and creative reuse, the project:
Collects donated or discarded clothing and fabrics,
Works with local designers and tailors to reimagine them into contemporary fashion pieces, and
Channels these new creations into two streams:
Sales, to fund social programs and local innovation
Free distribution, as incentives to pregnant women to encourage facility-based antenatal care
The result is a closed-loop system that connects climate action to maternal health, with fashion as the bridge between.
